(Sports Network) - Houston Astros infielder Aaron Boone has been activated off the 60-day disabled list and will return to the active roster after recovering from open heart surgery performed in late March.
The 36-year-old Boone had the procedure to correct a condition he has had since college that involves an aortic valve replacement. An acceleration in his condition prompted the decision.
Boone signed a one-year deal with Houston last December after spending the 2008 season with Washington. He batted .241 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in through 104 games, playing first, second and third base.
Perhaps best known for hitting the series-winning homer in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS to send the New York Yankees past the Red Sox and into the Fall Classic, Boone began light workouts in June, started taking batting practice in late July and on August 10 began a rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi.
In 11 games for the Hooks and Triple-A Round Rock, Boone had four hits in 26 at-bats with a double and an RBI.
Boone owns a lifetime .264 average with 126 homers and 555 RBI in 1,142 games with the Reds, Yankees, Indians, Marlins and Nationals.
The Astros also activated pitchers Doug Brocail and Wesley Wright off the 15- day disabled list. Both had been sidelined with shoulder strains.
Brocail had been sidelined since August 5. The right-hander, who also missed time this season with a strained rotator cuff and a left hamstring strain, has appeared in just 10 games heading into Tuesday's play and has a record of 1-0 with a 5.40 earned run average.
The 42-year-old veteran has also pitched for San Diego, Detroit and Texas since breaking into the majors in 1992.
Wright, a 24-year-old lefty, had been out since August 12. In his second big league season, he enters Tuesday's action with a mark of 2-2 with a 5.97 ERA in 33 games.
