WASHINGTON - A woman struck by a Metrobus on Thursday remains in stable condition at George Washington Hospital on Friday morning, authorities tell ABC 7 News.

Amanda Mahnke, 30, of Northwest D.C. was seriously injured after she was struck by the bus at Florida and Connecticut Avenues.

Police say Mahnke, who works as a communications director for Washington State Congressman Rick Larsen, was jogging just blocks from her Dupont Circle apartment at the time of the incident. Authorities say she did not have identification on her.

As is standard procedure, the driver has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation and will be given a drug test.

The incident happened around 8:35 a.m. at the intersection of Florida and Connecticut Avenues when an out-of-service Metrobus was on its way to the bus garage. As the operator was turning from Connecticut Avenue onto Florida Avenue, the bus struck the woman who was in the roadway.

Officials say Mahnke suffered head injuries, internal bleeding and broken ribs.

The driver of the bus was also transported to a local hospital for a check up.

Witnesses describe the grizzly scene: a young woman had just entered the crosswalk when a bus coming east on Florida Avenue slammed into her.

"She was jogging across the street and the bus hit her and you could hear the sounds from back there," said one witness.

The bus did not come to a stop until well past the intersection, an indication of how hard it struck the woman.

"It seems the bus probably was going pretty fast," said a witness.

The area is a busy stretch for commuters heading downtown, and the aftermath of the incident left pedestrians stunned.

"I was trying not to look. I was already a little shaky..." said a witness.

Witnesses say the female bus driver, a nine year veteran, appeared distraught.

"Metro basically took the driver and covered her up and took her away," said a witness.

Investigators tell ABC 7 News that based on witness accounts, the victim jogged into the crosswalk with the signal. They spent hours going over the accident scene and the bus. Now, the focus is on a nearby crime camera. Investigators say they hope it recorded the accident as it unfolded.

We do not know who was at fault at this time yet some assume the bus was wrong.  as previously stated, people often challenge the buses, because they assume the driver will fear termination or other repercussion.  Do we know if she was wearing an Ipod? or talking on the phone?  people dont pay attention when walking or jogging.
