Delgado's mother, 60-year-old Rebecca L. Sacra, of Alexandria
(web | news) , Va., was in the passenger seat of the 2007 Saturn Ion. Her 2-year-old son, Jonathan Wade-Ortiz, was properly restrained in a child seat in the back, next to his 12-year-old cousin. They were traveling eastbound on Route 234 about 12:45 a.m. Friday, returning from a family vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Delgado said she had stopped for a red light at University Boulevard. The last thing she remembers is the squeal of brakes.
Investigators say the family was rear-ended by 2004 Ford Explorer driven by 26-year-old William John Mallory of Stafford, Va.. The impact forced the family's 2007 Saturn Ion off the road and into a field, where it hit a boulder, police said.
"It killed my son and my mother instantly," Delgado said. She was seriously hurt in the crash and spent hours at the hospital.
"Wake up, wake up, mom! Jonathan, wake up!" Delgado recalls screaming when she regained consciousness. "Then I just got out of my car and dropped to my knees and begged God, 'No, please, no.'"
