COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A flu outbreak at the University of Maryland is getting worse Tuesday night, with school officials saying nearly 200 students have been infected with what's believed to be swine flu.
In an effort to stop the spread of what is presumed to be an outbreak of H1N1, the University of Maryland has broken out the surgical masks.
It started with two cases on Friday and by 12 p.m. Tuesday, the campus health center had a three-hour wait.
University Vice President Linda Clement says she and her staff anticipated the arrival of H1N1 and have been preparing for months. Hand sanitizers have been installed in every building and students who get sick are urged to "self isolate." Even so, Clement expects a challenging semester.
"We're anticipating a steady flow from here on out because many people who are coming in to see us at the health center have already been to class. And if they've already been to class and they're sick, the chances they've passed it on to other people are great," she said.
Sam Goldklang and her roommate have both had it and say the illness is spreading fast. "A lot of people have it and everyone else doesn't want to have it -- so any symptom of like even a cough people are kind of freaking out," she said.
