TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - A private academy in Prince George's County is facing serious money troubles Thursday night.
The Progressive Christian Academy and adjoining Baptist church in Temple Hills are in foreclosure and scheduled to go to auction later this month. While the pastor vows to save it, court documents show the federal government filed two tax liens against him totaling more than half-a-million dollars.
There's no sign of the financial troubles outside the Progressive Christian Academy Thursday. The only sign reads, "Enroll Today," but an auctioneer's Web site and ads in local newspapers say the school and church are up for sale on Sept. 22.
"I never heard they had a tax lien and they had money problems and everything like that. I never heard anything [like] that," said Mitchell Matthews, a parent.
Matthews' son started at the church's preschool this year. "Yeah I'm very concerned about that especially -- they didn't tell us that," he said.
Pastor Don Massey started the small school 10 years ago. "We're looking at all possible avenues and scenarios," he said.
Massey says he'll continue offering that type of education at the school, saying he's working with the bank. "We're refinancing, re-modifying our loan just like anyone else and you know we're here; we're open and we're going to keep on serving the families in our community."
But some parents say they want to hear more specifics about the school's financial situation and what happens if the school goes on the auction block.
"I want to hear about that from them," said Matthews. "I really would like to hear about it from them. [As a] matter of fact, tomorrow when I come here I'm definitely going to inquire about it."
