(Sports Network) - Florida remained the top team in the latest
Associated Press college football poll, but upset victims Southern California
and BYU took major tumbles down the rankings.
The Gators (3-0) received 55 first-place votes, one fewer than last week, and
a total of 1,488 points from a nationwide media panel after a 23-13 win over
Tennessee on Saturday at the Swamp.
Texas (3-0) held on to the second spot after avenging last year's loss to
Texas Tech with a 34-24 win on Saturday in Austin. The Longhorns garnered two
first-place votes, one more than last week.
Alabama (3-0) picked up three top tallies and moved up from fourth to third,
taking advantage of Southern California's surprising loss at Washington. The
Trojans dropped from third to 12th following the 16-13 setback, while the
Huskies, who did not win a game last season, joined the poll at No. 24.
Ole Miss (2-0) moved up one spot into fourth, while Penn State (3-0), which
had been tied with the Rebels for fifth, stayed No. 5. The Nittany Lions have
one fewer point than Ole Miss this week.
California, LSU, Boise State, Miami-Florida and Oklahoma complete this week's
top 10. Miami was 20th last week, but vaulted 11 places thanks to a 33-17 rout
of Georgia Tech on Thursday.
This week's second 10 consists of Virginia Tech, Southern California, Ohio
State, Cincinnati, TCU, Oklahoma State, Houston, Florida State, BYU and
Kansas.
BYU, which handed Oklahoma a season-opening defeat, was trounced by Florida
State on Saturday, 54-28. The Cougars, who had been ranked seventh, dropped 12
places to 19th. Florida State is back in the poll after being ranked to start
the season. The Seminoles were beaten by Miami on Labor Day and fell out of
the rankings.
Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Washington and Nebraska are the last five
teams ranked this week. Nebraska dropped six spots from 19th after a 16-15
loss at Virginia Tech.
Georgia Tech's loss to Miami cost the Yellow Jackets a spot this week, while
Utah had the nation's longest winning streak stopped at 16 games with a 31-24
setback at Oregon and lost its ranking. Georgia Tech was ranked 14th and Utah
had been No. 18.
Just one game next Saturday features a pair of ranked teams, as Miami visits
Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech.
