Four-Alarm Fire in Adams Morgan
posted 5:30 pm Mon October 01, 2007 - Washington
A massive fire at an Adams Morgan condominium complex is now under control.
It took nearly seven hours for firefighters to extinguish the four-alarm blaze. One major problem faced by fire crews - water.
Fire officials say firefighters also had to battle a broken fire hydrant and low water pressure. Crews had to run thousands of feet of hose - all the way to Connecticut Avenue, on the other side of Rock Creek Park - to find the water to the battle the blaze.
"It's clear to me we did not have, in our neighborhood, sufficient water pressure to fight this fire the way it should have been fought," said Ward One D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham. "To my mind, that raises serious questions about the priorities at WASA."
The need to run hoses from Connecticut Avenue caused rush-hour problems, when firefighters had to temporarily close the major thoroughfare to protect the hoses. The road reopened by 8:45 a.m. Monday morning
The stubborn blaze broke out about 1:15 a.m. early Monday, destroying the building and displacing about 50 residents. Firefighters had to evacuate neighboring buildings; those residents have since been allowed back.
Three firefighters became trapped during the blaze. Rescuers stacked ladder on top of ladder to help them get down.
Fire department spokesman Alan Etter says two fire fighters were injured from falling debris. No condo resident was hurt.
Etter says a temporary shelter is being set up at Engine 21 on the 1700 block of Lanier Place, and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced people.
One bright note, a firefighter was able to retrieve a recently engaged woman's engagement ring.
D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is also pledging to speed up the timetable for renovations of the city's oldest water pipelines.
The area is known to have low water pressure, and that contributed to the difficulty in fighting the fire. Firefighters had to take the hoses long distances to tap a larger main when the first one wasn't enough - causing huge delays.
Fenty says the lines in the area need to be replaced "just as soon as humanly possible."
