Montgomery Police to Resign for 'Double-Dipping'
posted 5:08 pm Mon October 01, 2007 - ROCKVILLE, Md.
At least seven of the 14 Montgomery police officers who were suspended for allegedly working off-duty security jobs while they were supposed to be on the clock on their regular police shifts will resign and pay restitution to the county.
Defense attorneys say that five of those officers will plead guilty to a misdemeanor, two others have deals that allow them to avoid criminal charges, and the status of the other cases is unclear because some defense attorneys declined to comment. The deals and charges are apparently related to how much money the officers made from the part-time security work while on-duty at their county police jobs.
The attorney for James Redd, an officer based in the Silver Spring station, says he expects his client to be indicted on felony theft charges after the officer allegedly unlawfully earned $24,000 working security at a real estate company.
Redd's attorney, Thomas Heeney, says the overlap was caused by poor record-keeping and says his client is innocent.
