Virginia Holds First Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday
posted 5:41 pm Fri October 05, 2007 - Richmond, Va.
Virginians can save money on energy-saving appliances this weekend as the state offers its first sales-tax holiday on certain Energy Star products. The four-day sales tax holiday began Friday and continues through Monday.
The Energy Star label means a product meets strict energy-efficiency criteria set by the federal government. During the holiday, sales tax won't be charged in Virginia on certain Energy Star-rated products priced at $2,500 or less per item. The purchases must be for noncommercial or personal use.
The list of exempt products includes large-ticket items like air conditioners, refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines, but also includes compact fluorescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats, ceiling fans and dehumidifiers.
Retailers are expecting hearty business.
"We've gotten a lot of calls and a lot of people who want to buy now because of the tax break," said Tom Rys of Bray and Scarff Appliance and Kitchen Specialists.
The sales-tax exemption also applies to purchases of used Energy Star products that meet the qualifications.
Virginia's General Assembly approved the Energy Star sales tax holiday this year.
