Ex-School Official Charged with Embezzling Funds

A former D.C. school official who was in charge of overseeing the school system's financial integrity has been charged with embezzling at least $46,000.
Court papers were filed Monday charging Eugene Smith with stealing money several months after he stopped working as the director of internal audit.
Smith was given control over closing out the accounts of New Vistas Preparatory Public Charter School when it was shut down in 2001. Court papers say the school's bank account had more than $500,000. Prosecutors say that Smith used an illicit debit card to access the account after he transferred it to his personal control.
The charges were first reported in The Washington Examiner.
