Regional Officials Urge Water Conservation
posted 4:49 pm Wed October 03, 2007 - Washington
Unusually dry weather has prompted the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments to ask area businesses and residents to conserve water. Regional officials are asking people to limit the watering of lawns and shrubs; use a broom instead of a hose to clean sidewalks; limit showers to under five minutes; and wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
Officials say the Potomac River's water supply remains adequate, but that other reservoirs such as Lake Manassas and Beaverdam in Virginia are below normal.
The Council of Governments says precipitation in the Washington area over the past month is 50 to 75 percent below normal and has dropped more than five inches below normal over the past 90 days.
The dry weather already has led Loudoun County to declare a water shortage emergency.
