Fenty Proposes $81 Million School Restructuring

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty wants to pump an additional $81 million into the city's public schools to restructure the central office and help cover a projected budget shortfall. Fenty and Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee say the plan will streamline the system, improve food service and other programs and maintain surplus school building space.
Rhee wants cut about 200 of the central office's 914 jobs, using some of the additional money for severance packages. She is planning to ask the D.C. Council to suspend the city's personnel law to allow her to make those moves.
Fenty says he wants to find the plan with money from $100 million in unexpected tax revenue identified last month by Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi.
Fenty took direct control of the 50,000-student system earlier this year.
