Scientists Worry About Overharvesting of Blue Crabs
posted 7:09 am Thu October 04, 2007 - Annapolis, Md.
Maryland and Virginia scientists are reporting a low number of baby blue crabs last winter.
Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist Lynn Fegley says that raises their concern about the diminishing population of blue crabs and overharvesting this year. The scientists released the report this week. It estimated the bay's crab population at about 273 million. But it showed the adult crab numbers were low and the juvenile crabs were at the second lowest number since 1989.
If their predictions are accurate, officials say the catch this year could be defined as overharvesting.
Officials say they'll know by December 15 if overharvesting occurred because that's when the crab season ends.
