BRAC Jobs Create Housing "Crisis" for Lower-Income Folks
posted 5:08 pm Fri October 05, 2007 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Housing officials say more affordable housing is needed to protect current residents from increased housing prices driven by highly paid workers moving here as part of the Base Re-Alignment and Closure process.
State Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Raymond Skinner says they'll accomplish that by renovating older neighborhoods, building affordable homes and educating residents. Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold said Thursday at a meeting of BRAC officials that the problem has reached "crisis proportions" for people making less than $50,000.
State planners say many of the new jobs will pay more than $80,000 per year.
Officials say solutions could include the state's housing programs for those who earn a lower wage and inclusionary housing from all price ranges.
