Judge Wants Jail Population Capped
posted 11:11 am Sat October 06, 2007 - WASHINGTON
A D.C. Superior Court judge is threatening to hold Mayor Adrian Fenty in contempt of court for if he doesn't enforce a limit on the number of inmates in the D.C. jail.
Judge Melvin Wright ordered the city in August to set a cap to comply with a 2004 law meant to improve conditions. As part of the legislation, an outside consultant suggested a limit of 2,164 inmates.
But city officials say they don't want to be locked into the consultant's number and have argued that Wright has no authority to force it to set a limit.
But Wright set a deadline of Friday for the city to obey or appeal his ruling. City leaders have said they will appeal.
