Remembering Congresswoman Davis

Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis is being remembered as an unpretentious business owner who put her religious beliefs first.
Davis died of breast cancer at age 57 on Saturday at her Gloucester home. She was the daughter of a Hampton city bus driver. After graduating from Hampton Roads Business College in 1971, Davis went to work as an executive secretary for a real estate firm. She later got her real estate license and opened her own real estate firm.
A GOP activist who was also active in Davis' church persuaded her to run for the General Assembly in 1997, and Davis defeated a 15-year incumbent.
She launched her campaign for Congress when incumbent Republican Herb Bateman announced he was retiring, then died in office. Davis has easily won re-election in the conservative 1st District. She said she voted her religious beliefs against gay marriage and abortion.
Democratic Congressman Bobby Scott of Newport News says he and Davis had different political loyalties, but praises her commitment to the Hampton Roads area.
Funeral services will be held for Davis on Thursday.
