Another 'Day Without Immigrants' in Prince William
posted 6:53 am Wed October 10, 2007 - Manassas, Va.
It was business as usual in many Prince William County workplaces Tuesday, despite a work stoppage by many immigrants. The boycott was organized by the advocacy group Mexicans Without Borders to protest plans by county supervisors to deny many public services to illegal immigrants and broaden status checks by police.
A few businesses operated with smaller staffs or closed altogether, but there appeared to be a minimal effect on construction sites, restaurants and retail stores.
Some workers defied threats from their employers when they walked off the job. But other immigrant workers stayed on the job.
Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart predicts the boycotts will have a minimal effect on the business economy.
