D.C. School Officials Track Students' Progress
posted 4:51 am Tue October 09, 2007 - Washington
D.C. school officials will use a database to track students from pre-kindergarten to college graduation.
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education says the database will continue to collect information on students who transfer schools, including those who switch to private schools or leave the city. Poor record keeping has kept D.C. school officials from computing accurate dropout and graduation rates or determining what happens to students once they graduate or transfer.
Spokesman Jack Stokes says the officials will also use the database to monitor performance as students move through the system so schools can catch problems before they get to a critical point.
The city will pay for the project with a $5.7million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
