The Alexandria City Council is refusing to join other northern Virginia jurisdictions by cracking down on illegal immigrants, saying the enforcement of federal immigration law is not a local responsibility.
Council members unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday, clarifying the city's position on immigration issues. The resolution underscores Alexandria's commitment diversity and affirms the city will ensure "all people within our City limits are accorded equal protection under the law, and that the role of local government is to provide for the health, safety, and security of the entire community."
In a statement, the council said the city and its agencies won't inquire about the legal status of of anyone who uses its services, except as required by State and Federal law.
The city, however, will continue check the legal status of anyone charged with serious crimes.
"Our resolution is an extension of what we have been doing as a City government for a long time," said Alexandria Mayor William Euille in the statement. "Alexandria is a caring community. We value our diversity, and we pride ourselves on treating everyone with dignity and respect."
