Fairfax Jail to Check Immigration Status of Inmates
posted 3:57 pm Thu October 11, 2007 - Fairfax, Va.
The Fairfax County jail will begin screening inmates for immigration violations and working with federal authorities to deport illegal immigrants.
County Sheriff Stan Barry says at least 16 percent of the 27,000 people who were housed in the jail last year were suspected of being here illegally. County officials have been reluctant to have police enforce immigration laws but they say Barry's initiative is different because the people being screened already have been arrested.
Deputies will work in partnership with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, giving them instant access to federal immigration databases. The sheriff's office also will be allowed to schedule deportation hearings for suspected illegal immigrants set cash "immigration bonds" that must be paid in full before inmates are released.
Advocates for immigrants in Virginia have been critical of using police to enforce federal immigration law, but less so when immigration checks are performed in jails.
