D.C. Agrees to Cap Jail Population
posted 6:38 am Thu October 11, 2007 - Washington
D.C. officials and advocates for jail inmates have reached a settlement in a lawsuit over the population of the D.C. Jail.
The city will cap the jail's population at 2,164 and drop plans to appeal a judge's threat to hold Mayor Adrian Fenty in contempt if the city didn't agree to the limit. The settlement will be filed Friday in D.C. Superior Court.
The D.C. Prisoners' Legal Services Project had sued the city to force it to comply with a 2004 law aimed at improving conditions at the District's main jail.
The city has agreed to stick to the population cap except in extreme circumstances such as an unexpected mass arrest.
