Naval Academy Agrees to Return South Korean Flag
posted 6:45 am Thu October 11, 2007 - Annapolis, Md.
The Naval Academy has agreed to return to South Korea a flag that was captured by U.S. forces in an 1871 battle.
The academy was asked earlier this year to return the flag during a visit by a cultural delegation from South Korea. Thomas Duvernay, a Korean history professor at Handong Global University in South Korea, says the huge yellow and blue banner is the Korean equivalent of Old Glory or the Liberty Bell in America.
Duvernay says the flag is expected to arrive in Korea next Friday.
Marines seized the flag after storming a Korean citadel during a trade mission shortly after the American Civil War.
Naval Academy officials declined to discuss why they decided to return the flag.
