Springfield, Alexandria Compete for Military Jobs
posted 7:06 am Thu October 11, 2007 - Alexandria, Va.
Alexandria has suddenly emerged as a competitor for as many as 6,200 military jobs being diverted from expansion plans at Fort Belvoir.
The Army had said it was considering a Springfield site for the jobs to be closer to Metro and Virginia Railway Express. Now Fairfax County officials are crying foul over the bid by developers of the Alexandria site. Fairfax County was hoping the influx of jobs would spur a revival around the transit center in Springfield.
Congressmen Jim Moran and Tom Davis have weighed in. Moran says the Alexandria site could draw jobs along with Springfield - not replace the Springfield option.
But Assistant Army Secretary Keith Eastin says he hopes to keep the 6,200 jobs at the same location. He says the Alexandria developers made a credible presentation.
Many of the jobs are slated to move out of leased space in Arlington as part of the Pentagon's base closing process.
