O'Malley Plans Special Session Update
posted 2:51 pm Thu October 11, 2007 - Annapolis, Md.
Gov. Martin O'Malley says that early next week he will say more about when he plans to hold a special session to address Maryland's $1.7 billion budget deficit.
O'Malley says the special session can't be held much later than the beginning of November. The governor spoke about his plans on WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi radio show. O'Malley says it would take too long to implement his budget plan if lawmakers wait until the regular session. Without a special session, O'Malley says, the state's deficit would grow to $2.2 billion.
O'Malley is moving ahead despite opposition to the idea from Maryland Republicans and even some Democrats, who say his budget plan is too complicated to handle in a special session.
