Former Mayor Praises Vouchers After Critical Report

Former D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams is defending a school voucher program that was criticized in a report from the Government Accountability Office.
The report says the program lacks financial controls and fails to check whether schools are accredited. It said some schools were unsuitable for learning. Congress created the program in 2004 with Williams' support. It provides scholarships for private school tuition for low-income families. The program covers about 1,900 students.
In a statement, Williams says improvements can be made to any new operation - especially one that forms and grows very quickly. But he says parents are largely satisfied with their choice to participate.
Each student can receive up to $7,500 a year for tuition and fees with a choice of about 60 private D.C. schools.
