D.C. Schools Chancellor Wants Power to Fire Workers

D.C. schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee is finishing legislation that would give her the power to remove hundreds of school system employees whom she has deemed ineffective.
Rhee has said streamlining the central office is central to her school reform effort. Mafara Hobson, a spokeswoman for Rhee, says the legislation will make the system more efficient. She says it won't involve buying out contracts for existing employees.
School officials have said about 200 of the more than 900 central office jobs could be eliminated. But crafting legislation to give Rhee the power to reshape the staff has taken close to a month.
One problem - the school system didn't have an accurate count of its employees.
Hobson says the bill could be introduced with the D.C. Council as soon as Friday.
