Virginia GOP to Decide How to Pick U.S. Senate Candidate

State Republican leaders are expected to decide Saturday how they will nominate a candidate for the U.S. Senate, through a convention or a primary election.
The party's central committee's decision may determine who will be the GOP nominee in next year's race to replace Republican Senator John Warner, who's retiring. Former Governor Jim Gilmore is pushing for a state convention, which is likely to be dominated by conservative party insiders who championed his gubernatorial campaign in 1997. Supporters of Congressman Tom Davis of Fairfax County want to hold a primary.
They think his popularity in northern Virginia could translate to a strong showing.
Davis supporters say a primary would give the party's nominee exposure that will be needed next fall to take on former Governor Mark Warner, the only Democrat expected to run for the Senate.
Gilmore argues that a primary campaign will waste millions of dollars that Republicans could better spend against Warner.
