State Republican leaders are expected to decide Saturday how they will nominate a candidate for the U.S. Senate, through a convention or a primary election.

The party's central committee's decision may determine who will be the GOP nominee in next year's race to replace Republican Senator John Warner, who's retiring. Former Governor Jim Gilmore is pushing for a state convention, which is likely to be dominated by conservative party insiders who championed his gubernatorial campaign in 1997. Davis wouldn't even be able to keep his House seat, let alone win a statewide election against Mark Warner. Good luck with that.
