Lawmakers Unsold on O'Malley's Plans for Special Session
posted 7:18 pm Fri October 12, 2007 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Even lawmakers who agree with Governor Martin O'Malley's tax proposals aren't sure they're going to succeed during a special session.
O'Malley's spokesman said Friday that the governor will formally call for a special session of the General Assembly on Monday. House Majority Leader Kumar Barve says lawmakers are going to need "lots and lots and lots of time." He points out that Senate President Mike Miller and House Speaker Michael Busch have publicly disagreed on the need for a special session and how best to solve Maryland's budget problems.
Neither Busch nor Miller were immediately available for comment Friday.
Republicans oppose the special session. They don't want to raise taxes without a full budget under consideration.
