The National Council on Pet Population estimates 4 million pets in animal shelters are put to sleep every year, while the American Humane Association puts that number closer to 10 million. Now there is a new website to help save those dogs in danger.

Shelter dogs are often killed due to behavior, age, or medical reasons, however millions of adoptable dogs are killed due to lack of space. At the Clarke County Animal Shelter, they have 20 dogs waiting to be adopted but only have space for 12.

If they can't find homes for some of these dogs they may have to be put down. Animal Control Officer Jennifer Moye does not want to see that happen so she posted pictures of several long time shelter residents, like Sparky on the website, DogsInDanger.

"Sparky is a really great dog." Moye said about the pup who has been at the shelter since March. "He loves to play ball, he's house broken."

Alex Aliksanyan, creator of DogsInDanger, said he hope the site will save dogs but also inform the public about what's going on inside the shelters.

"We believe an informed public is a compassionate public." Aliksanyan said.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?DogsInDanger works with more than 120 shelters nationwide that destroy dogs. How much time the dogs get before death varies from state to state. If the dog is found on the street, it must be kept a minimum number of days, while animals abandoned at a shelter by their owners can often be put to death immediately.

About 110 shelters have signed on to the free service since the site launched, but it seems to work. DogsInDanger, is already boasting dozens of success stories and in their second week on the site, the Clark County Shelter had six dogs adopted.

National euthanasia statistics are difficult to pinpoint because animal control agencies are not uniformly required to keep statistics on the number of animals taken in, adopted, euthanized, or reclaimed.

Moye hopes the added attention from DogsInDanger will fetch a new home for Sparky.

You can reach the Clarke County Animal Shelter at 540-955-5104. Their address is 225 Ramsburg Lane in Berryville.

If I didn't already have a house full of pets (both cats and dogs), I'd adopt one of these charming little guys!
