Democrats in Key Virginia Senate Races Outraise GOP Rivals
posted 5:31 am Tue October 16, 2007 - Richmond, Va.
Democrats in key state Senate races are raising more money than their Republican opponents.
Reports due to the State Board of Elections Monday show that they also are benefiting from the fundraising prowess of popular Governor Tim Kaine. Kaine's political action committee Moving Virginia Forward raised slightly more than a one million dollars in September and gave $1.3 million to Democratic House and Senate candidates last month.
Kaine's PAC gave $50,000 apiece to the campaigns of Democrats George Barker, Ralph Northam and Chap Petersen, all of whom are challenging GOP Senate incumbents, and to Albert Pollard, John Miller and Janet Oleszek, all of whom are seeking seats vacated by departing Republicans.
Democrats believe six or seven Senate races present their best chances for winning the four GOP seats they need to take a Senate majority for the first time in 12 years. They would need 11 seats in the House to have a majority.
