Controversy Heats Up Over Possible Demolition

M
ontgomery County wants to demolish a handful of buildings, including Garrett Park Estates Rec Center, because they are in serious disrepair. The center has housed a cooperative pre-school for more than a half-century. It's considered an institution in the community, especially for parents who count on this school to inspire and encourage their children. One parent, who comes from Rockville said, "I love this program so much that we commute over here everyday just to go to the school."
Many people are fighting to save the building from the wrecking ball, including the group Save Our School task force. Co-Chair Angie Melton says the buildings have significant draining and roof problems but said she and others cherish the environment. They fear when the county hands over the space to the school system, the building will be torn down and paved over with a parking lot.
There are no other nursery schools in Garret Park. Currently, there are 41 kids enrolled. A town hall meeting is being held Tuesday night to talk about the situation.
