posted 7:43 am Wed October 17, 2007 - Blacksburg, Va.
The families of 25 victims of the mass shootings at Virginia Tech have given notice that they may file lawsuits against Blacksburg.
Town Attorney Larry Spencer received notices from lawyers for three families Tuesday - the six-month anniversary of the shootings and the deadline under state law for giving notice of a possible claim against a locality. Spencer received notices of possible lawsuits on behalf of the families of Daniel O'Neil, Erin Nicole Peterson and Ross Abdallah Alameddine. They were among the 32 people killed April 16th by student gunman Seung-Hui Cho before he committed suicide.
The town received notices of 20 possible claims Friday and two on Monday.
A spokesman for the state attorney general said he was aware of notices of 20 possible claims against the state, but families have a year to make such filings.
No lawsuits have yet been filed in the aftermath of the shootings.
