U.S. Marshals arrested Christopher Edwards, also known as Wayne Williams, around 9:30 p.m. Monday night in connection with the death of two-year old Brandi McComb. The toddler, Brandi Smith, was strapped into the backseat of a Plymouth Neon crossing Sherman Avenue on Columbia Road when the vehicle was struck broadside by a green Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling northbound on Sherman Avenue early Sunday morning in Columbia Heights.
The impact flipped the Neon, smashing it into a light pole. The two-year-old was rushed to Children's Hospital where she later died. The girl's mother, 23-year-old Shermeca McComb, and two other passengers were critically hurt in the crash.
Police say they had tried to pull over the Monte Carlo after the driver ran a red light on Georgia Avenue. Investigators say police did not chase the Monte Carlo because the district's chase policy does not allow for pursuits because of traffic violations.
Witnesses say the driver of the Monte Carlo got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. They say he appeared to have suffered a head wound.
Investigators say the suspect had borrowed the green Chevrolet Monte Carlo from a friend, who did not report the vehicle stolen. U.S. Marshalls and D.C. Police detectives said they found Edwards hiding under the steps of a residence in the 2500 block of Iverson St. Temple Hills, Md.
