Navy Awaits Trial of Sponsor Accused of Taping Mids

As the Naval Academy awaits Monday's trial of a sponsor accused of secretly taping midshipmen having sex in his home, the academy is taking a new look at the program of allowing mids to stay in local homes.
The Naval Academy has more than a thousand so-called "sponsors," who provide a home away from home for the midshipmen and play host on weekends and holidays.
According to The (Baltimore) Sun, since 1996 at least 15 midshipmen have said they were the victims of some kind of sexual misconduct either in the homes or at the hands of sponsors.
On trial Monday is Commander Kevin Ronan, a Navy doctor charged with conduct unbecoming an officer and illegal wiretapping. Investigators say Ronan recorded midshipmen having sex with their civilian girlfriends while they were staying in his home.
Ronan could be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
