Iraq War Veteran Running as a Democrat for Congress
posted 4:20 pm Mon October 29, 2007 - Richmond, Va.
A decorated Iraq War veteran and former school teacher is running as a Democrat for the congressional seat vacated by the death of Republican Jo Ann Davis.

Phillip Forgit, who lost a state legislative race in 2003 to Republican Delegate Melanie Rapp, becomes the first Democrat to announce plans to run in the heavily Republican district.
Forgit was an elementary school teacher in 2005 when his Navy Reserve unit was sent to Iraq.

He served as a special adviser to the Iraqi Army and was awarded a Bronze Star. At least eight Republicans are running, with the latest, Catesby Jones, announcing his bid Sunday. Jones owns Peace Frogs, a Gloucester-based retailer and clothing company.

A November 10th convention will decide the GOP nominee. Forgit told the Daily Press newspaper, "The Republican convention will not simply annoint my next congressman."

Jeez - sdoes omebody need a little time out? His qualifications are that he is a United States Citizen and over 25 years of age (having lived here for 7 years - time in uniform overseas counts). Unless Mr. Gavin has a different version of the Constitution, that's all the qualification he needs to run. Having said that, the fact that he was willing to sacrifice his safety and comfort to serve his country tells me that he is more qualified than 90% of those currently serving in Congress. Have a nice day Mr. Gavin and don't forget to refill that prescription!
