Maryland Lawmakers Gather to Consider Budget Proposals
posted 5:46 pm Mon October 29, 2007 - Annapolis, Md.
Maryland lawmakers are gathering tonight for a special session to consider Governor Martin O'Malley's proposals to battle a 1.7 billion dollar budget deficit, a plan that includes taxes and a pitch to legalize up to 15,000 slot machines in a referendum.
With the budget plan mixing the two volatile issues, anti-tax groups and gambling opponents were speaking out against it. About two dozen protesters rallied at lunchtime Monday outside the State House to urge lawmakers to reject the tax proposals. Karri Bragg of Americans for Tax Reform said O'Malley is trying to pull wool over peoples' eyes by saying new taxes are needed to get our of the budget hole.
General Assembly members will also to consider details of O'Malley's slot machine plan, made public Friday night.
Republicans have criticized O'Malley's budget plan as heavy on taxes and light on fiscal responsibility and have withdrawn support for slot machines. They've denounced the special legislative session as an excuse to rush through large and unnecessary tax increases.
