Prince William County Wants Immigration Lawsuit Dismissed
posted 5:17 pm Tue October 30, 2007 - Alexandria, Va.
Prince William County is asking a federal judge to toss out a lawsuit filed earlier this month challenging a county resolution that targets illegal immigrants.
In court papers filed Tuesday, the county argues that "illegal immigration has real world consequences in places where illegal immigrants locate" and that citizens are justified in seeking solutions from their local government. The county also argues that none of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit can point to any actual harm they have suffered as a result of the newly enacted resolution.
A group of Latino county residents filed the lawsuit earlier this month, arguing that they will face racial discrimination as a result of the resolution, which requires police to check the immigration status of people they detain if they believe the person is an illegal immigrant.
