Senate Passes Bill to Open Up Skies for Hagerstown
posted 10:37 am Wed October 31, 2007 - Washington
The U.S. Senate has passed a bill aimed at restoring commercial air service to Hagerstown; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Brookings, South Dakota.
The measure would extend through next September the eligibility requirements for federal subsidies under the Essential Air Service program. All three airports lost scheduled passenger service October 1st amid a dispute over how the distances between the affected communities and the closest major airport should be calculated.
Hagerstown Regional Airport would qualify for the subsidy only if the distance from downtown Hagerstown to Washington Dulles International airport is certified as 70 miles or more. Drivers can make the trip in 64 miles on a combination of four-lane and two-lane roads, or 78 miles using only four-lane highways.
