Panel Recommends Assistance for Maryland Farmers
posted 11:39 am Wed October 31, 2007 - Annapolis, Md.
Maryland dairy farmers would get some rainy day help from the state under a plan proposed by an industry panel.
The Maryland Dairy Emergency Fund would provide farmers with financial assistance during times of economic hardship due to depressed milk prices. The Maryland Dairy Industry Oversight and Advisory Council also recommends that the state pass a law prohibiting sales of fluid milk in Maryland at prices below cost.
The recommendations in the panel's first annual report are aimed at preserving an industry in decline due to higher milk production per cow, slowing growth in demand and competition from lower-cost production areas.
