Fighting Rising Energy Costs
posted 8:47 pm Wed October 31, 2007 - Frederick, Md.
When you turn up the heat, the government says it will cost 10% to 20% more than last year. Rising energy costs are nothing new, but Carbon Reduction Action Groups are new.
London started the trend and now a Maryland woman is starting one of the first U.S. Groups. "It's a problem we're all helping to create and we all have an opportunity to help fix," said Shannon Moore.
When Moore sees gasoline being used, power flowing, all emitting carbon dioxide, she said it's why she is leaning to CRAG.
"The way it works is people get together, calculate co2 emissions from their bills and then they make a commitment together of reducing a certain amount of the carbon dioxide."
CRAG'ers will calculate their carbon emissions starting December 1st, then try to reduce it 12%.
"I'm sure I'll find that I'm very wasteful," said Elin Ross. When she and Moore added up Ross's bills, they found 36,000 carbon dioxide pounds.
Moore said there are plenty of ways to save. Line drying clothes can cut 1,300 pounds a year, a new thermostat can shave 1,5000 pounds and energy-efficient lightbulbs and insulation saves another 5,300 pounds which means saving money.
"There is a need to do this and do it really well," said Moore.
