A brand new gym just opened in the District. But to get in you have to do something some people are not comfortable doing. They say it's an invasion of privacy!
It really is about your fingertip. When you want to work out all you have to do is put your finger down.
Day one for work outs at Vida Fitness. It's also the first time Carlos Arroyo gains access to the gym with the tip of his finger.
"It's great. I mean love it," said Arroyo.
No cards required here. Members put their finger down when they join. A computer creates a code of numbers to correspond with the print. When members arrive they simply touch their middle finger to the pad to gain access.
Owner David von Storch decided the no plastic approach is the best way to get members in quickly and allow them to use other amenities.
"Buy smoothies, sign up for training, do tanning and have it billed to their account without having to carry a key card," said von Storch.
Fitness enthusiasts on the go give the finger tip approach a thumbs up. But not everyone is thrilled.
"Is it important enough to give your fingerprint up so you can get into a gym I would have a real problem with this," said Stephen Block of the American Civil Liberties Union .
Block says he will stick with the YMCA and the traditional membership card.
"Data bases have been lost, stolen and sold," said Block.
But von Storch says the fingerprint is discarded just the numbers are maintained so there is little risk to the member.
"We can't retro engineer or re-engineer your fingerprint from that information so there is no real security or identity theft concerns," he said.
So far convenience appears to take precedence for Vida members over concern about privacy.
"I think it's amazing you don't need to carry anything on your key chain," said Vida member Jorge Navarrete.
