In an exclusive ABC 7 interview, Republican presidential candidate John McCain (web|news|bio) talks about his views on the financial industry bailout and his pick for vice president, Sarah Palin.
When asked about Battleground Virginia, McCain said, "I'm confident that we can win and will win the state of Virginia but it's going to be a tough fight. I understand that. I relish the underdog status."
ABC 7's Rebecca Cooper asks McCain, "Senator as you noted, Virginia is a state with a lot of military voters. Some of them are even questioning your choice of Sarah Palin. Is she who you will turn to in your administration during a time of international crisis?" McCain replied, "Of course and I've not met anyone in the military or out of the military who's not enthusiastic about Sarah Palin. She is the most popular governor in America."
ABC 7's Gordon Peterson says to McCain, "Senator you're known as a man who is not afraid to throw a Hail Mary pass - Sarah Palin being one of them." McCain replies, "She is not. She is not. She is not. She is not a Hail Mary pass. She is a proven, most popular governor in America. She's been a mayor. She's been a city council member. She has done a whole lot of things in her life that frankly a lot of other people have not done. And, again, she sparked enthusiasm, the likes of which I've never seen. It is a calculated, thoughtful choice that I'm incredibly proud of."
Peterson asks McCain, "Okay let me move to another calculated choice and that's the $700 billion bailout that some people are calling a Hail Mary pass. If this doesn't work, what happens then? It's going to fall right in your lap as president." McCain said, "Well. It's not going to. Uh. If we don't act, we can't wait until next January. Look, you saw the volatility of the markets, 1.2 trillion dollars were lost. We have to act and we have to act now. We're not going to fail, I don't believe. But if we do fail, like we did the first time, we'll just go back and keep trying again."
