Nearly one-in-seven couples have difficulty getting pregnant. 

Many of them seek out fertility doctors for help.

A growing number of women are also turning to holistic methods to try and speed up the process.

Thirty-six year-old Lisa Townsend tried to get pregnant for three-and-a-half years without success.

"We just assumed our timing was off and I tried not to get discouraged," said Townsend.

After having surgery for severe endometriosis, Townsend turned to holistic fertility treatments, like yoga and acupuncture, with a group of women in the same situation.

"Without a support network and information, I would have just been by myself," she said.

Over the past eight years, Shady Grove Fertility Center has seen an increasing number of women seeking out eastern practices to aide in their quest to get pregnant.

A number of recent studies suggest these methods work.

Shady Grove has opened 'Pulling Down the Moon', a center aimed at easing patients' anxiety and bringing their minds and bodies into balance through yoga, acupuncture, massage, and nutrition.

"[There's a] body of research that shows women who do acupuncture before and after embryo transfer have 43 percent conception rates verses women who do not acupuncture have 26 percent success rate," said Tami Quinn, co-founder of 'Pulling Down the Moon.'

"We're not advocating holistic care in lieu of western care - we're looking at them as a combination - a classic synergy," said Dr. Robert Stillman medical director of Shady Grove Fertility Center

For women coping with the stress and feeling of being out of control during infertility, holistic methods offer a way to feel like they're doing something to help their cause.

"I feel like I made myself healthier - gave myself better chance to get pregnant," said Townsend.

Townsend also used in vitro fertilization and is now 21 weeks pregnant.

Although she admits she probably would have gotten pregnant without the holistic methods, she says without a doubt it would have taken a much longer time.
