Today families and colleague from all over the country gathered in Emmitsburg, Md., on Sunday to honor 110 fallen firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2007.
ABC 7/NewsChannel 8 reporter Courtney Robinson was at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial where the sacrifices of those men and women were recognized.
Lauren Mulkey says everyday is a constant reminder of her husband, Louis Mulkey, who would have been 36 years old this Friday. "I miss his presence because when Louis was around you knew it," Mulkey said of her husband who is one of a group of fallen Charleston, South Carolina firefighters known as the Charleston 9.
"I do believe that my husband was a hero," Mulkey said. "He would never have said that he was; he would have said that he was doing his job and that's what he did on June 18, 2007. It was the day after their first anniversary when Mulkey and the eight others died in a furniture warehouse fire when the roof collapsed. It was the greatest loss of firefighters killed in the line of duty since 9/11.
Hunter Benke's dad, Theodore Benke, also died that day. "He went into that fire thinking there was people in there," said Benke. Hunter says he misses the ball games with his dad. And his mother says she misses her husband--a man, she says, shouldn't be on this memorial, but home. "It was definitely an honor," said Kim Benke [but] one I wish I wasn't a part of."
That feeling is something the families left behind by their firefighters can relate with. Their loved ones gave their lives to save others. "He's been a firefighter for 12 years. He goes in; he runs out; comes home; goes back to work every third day. You know that it's a possibility, but you just don't ever dwell on it because you pray that it will never happen," Mulkey said.
The Charleston 9 and 101 other men and women now join more than 3200 fallen firefighters remembered here at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, a place where their service will always be remembered and recognized.
