Two men were shot while sitting at a picnic table in a Reston area apartment complex in the middle of the afternoon Monday.
The two victims were sitting at the picnic tables when three Hispanic men approached, at least one had a gun, police said. The gunman opened fire. The victims fled to a nearby building, asking for help.
"The people that actually used to live here, that just moved out. Yeah, one of the guys came back and he was hanging out with a couple of his friends," said Juan Hill, a neighbor.
Both victims were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital for their injuries. They are both expected to survive.
Nearby schools held students inside briefly as police searched for the gunman and his accomplices. Investigators used tracking dogs and a police helicopter, but were unable to find the men.
Detectives from the gang unit were also called to the scene. Police did not say whether they suspected the shooting was gang related.
Parents say they don't let their children play in the area where the shooting happened.
"Yeah. I've seen a lot of unsavory characters running around here that aren't normally here too often," said Doug Fox, a neighbor.
"A lot of adults are sitting there, when they are not supposed to be sitting there -- so we feel it's not safe," added Joy Ezidinman, who also lives in the area.
