AIR FORCE: The Falcons ran for 401 yards on 77 attempts as they flew past the
San Diego State Aztecs in league play on Saturday night, 35-10. Asher Clark,
one of three players for the academy to reach the end zone on the ground,
finished with a game-high 109 yards on 15 carries, posting more than three
times the yardage total of SDSU (35 yards) on the ground. Quarterback Shea
Smith completed just two passes, yet one went for a 32-yard TD to Josh Cousins
in the fourth quarter. The Falcons play the second of back-to-back road games
this weekend when they challenge the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas. Last season the
academy posted a 31-14 win in the annual meeting, which now favors Air Force
by a count of 9-4.
BYU: It was a bit of a slow start for the BYU offense on Saturday, but Max
Hall finally finished with three touchdown passes as he led the ninth-ranked
Cougars to yet another win over New Mexico, 21-3. The triumph, the 16th in a
row for BYU, represents the longest win streak on college football as Hall
completed 22-of-34 passes for 273 yards in the program's 18th consecutive MWC
win as well. Austin Collie, who now has eight TD catches in '08, finished with
nine grabs for a game-high 162 yards, while Andrew George turned two of his
three receptions into scores as well. The Cougars play yet another non-
Saturday game this coming week as they travel to Fort Worth to face the TCU
Horned Frogs on Thursday night. As is the case with every team on the schedule
this season that has a history with the Cougars, BYU has beaten each of them
in their most recent meetings and TCU is no exception. A year ago the Cougars,
who this week remained ninth in the AP poll, picked up a 27-22 decision to
move just slightly ahead in the all-time series with the Frogs at 4-3.
COLORADO STATE: The Rams took an early 7-0 lead against TCU on Saturday, but
from there the offense for the home team fell silent in a 13-7 loss to the
Horned Frogs. Gartrell Johnson, who finished with the sole score for CSU,
managed just 30 yards on 16 rushing attempts for a team that was left with a
net of only 11 yards on 28 chances versus one of the top run defenses in all
of college football. Quarterbacks Klay Kubiak and Billy Farris combined to go
17-of-35 for 188 yards and a pair of picks, the former being brought down for
a loss of 45 yards along the way. The Rams head out for the first of back-to-
back road games this weekend as they drop in on Utah in Salt Lake City. Last
season, CSU was outscored rather handily in a 27-3 contest versus the Utes and
now trails in the all-time series by a count of 52-22-2.
NEW MEXICO: The Lobos struggled to find consistency on offense on Saturday,
producing just a single field goal in the 18-point loss to BYU in Provo. The
quarterback tandem of Brad Gruner and Tate Smith ended up 13-of-22 for 155
yards and an interception in the losing effort. Rodney Ferguson contributed 86
yards rushing on 24 attempts, but by no means was that nearly enough as the
team tallied just 130 yards on 50 rushing attempts. Playing at home for the
fifth time this season, the Lobos entertain the San Diego State Aztecs in MWC
action on Saturday. Although New Mexico trails in the all-time series, 20-14,
the squad still managed to come up with a 20-17 victory in last year's
meeting.
SAN DIEGO STATE: The run defense for the Aztecs failed to show up yet again on
Saturday as they permitted a hefty 401 yards to Air Force in a 35-10 setback
at Qualcomm Stadium. In addition to being unable to stop the run, SDSU could
not find a way to get its running game moving in the right direction either,
generating a mere 35 yards on 27 attempts. Quarterback Drew Westling was 18-
of-35 for 128 yards and a pair of picks, prompting the squad to turn to former
signal-caller-turned-wideout Darren Mougey to attempt three passes of his own,
which resulted in just one completion and two yards. The second half of the
season for the Aztecs begins this weekend as the team travels to Albuquerque
to face the New Mexico Lobos. Heading into the meeting SDSU maintains a 20-14
advantage in the all-time series, despite losing last year's affair by a score
of 20-17.
TCU: A three-yard touchdown run by Joseph Turner with just under seven minutes
to play in the first half proved to be the game-winner as the Horned Frogs
slipped by Colorado State on the road on Saturday, 13-7. Quarterback Marcus
Jackson led the way on the ground for the visitors with his 54 yards on 19
attempts and also completed 16-of-26 passes for 166 yards and a pick during a
game that saw a scoreless second half. TCU, which lost possession of one of
its five fumbles, survived 11 penalties that added up to a staggering 115
yards. The Horned Frogs play the first of two straight games at home this
week, getting an early call to the field on Thursday night to face BYU in Fort
Worth. According to TCU's notes the Cougars won last year's meeting, 27-22, to
take a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series.
UNLV: Following their first bye of the 2008 campaign, the Rebels get set to
take on the Air Force Falcons in another Mountain West Conference battle this
weekend at Sam Boyd Stadium. Last year, the Falcons picked up a 31-14 win over
the representatives from Sin City, which means UNLV now trails in the all-time
series by a count of 9-4.
UTAH: A couple of non-offensive touchdowns book-ended another strong effort by
the Utes as they dismissed the Wyoming Cowboys in a 40-7 romp on Saturday in
Laramie. Utah scored first on a 25-yard interception for a TD by Sean Smith
and closed out the day with R.J. Rice recovering a fumble in the end zone, not
to mention having Aiona Key return a blocked punt six yards for a score in the
second quarter as well. With all that activity, quarterback Brian Johnson
paced himself with just 10-of-19 passing for 110 yards and a score. Matt
Asiata contributed with one rushing score and another through the air for the
victors. The Utes, who remained 14th in the AP poll this week, return to
action this weekend against conference rival Colorado state at home. Last
year, Utah dominated CSU in a 27-3 decision, boosting the team's advantage in
the all-time series to 52-22-2.
WYOMING: Once again the Cowboys appeared out of sync on offense this past
weekend as they watched Utah come into Laramie and leave with a resounding
40-7 victory. In jeopardy of being shut out yet again this season, the Pokes
needed an 18-yard TD pass from Chris Stutzriem to Greg Bolling midway through
the fourth quarter to save face. Once again the so-called passing attack
stumbled around the field for the Cowboys as Karsten Sween was credited with
52 yards and three interceptions and Dax Crum missed on both of his pass
attempts. Devin Moore produced a game-high 106 yards on 23 carries, but it
meant very little in the final analysis. The Cowboys will be watching from the
stands this coming week, picking up their first bye of the 2008 campaign
before starting up again on October 25th versus TCU on the road. Last season,
the Pokes slipped by TCU in a 24-21 decision, allowing the Laramie clan to
even the all-time series with the Horned Frogs at two games apiece.
