TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - Prince George's County police say an officer fired at a man who repeatedly rammed his SUV into her cruiser. The man was not hit.
It happened around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday on South Anvil Lane in Temple Hills.
"That officer feared for her life," said resident Yolanda Blackledge. Cpl. Clinton Copeland says the officer was sitting in her cruiser when the SUV started ramming the car. He says the SUV pushed the cruiser into a barrier and continued to ram it.
The police car was hit hard so many times, it ended up on top of jersey walls. Inside, the desperate officer placed a frantic distress call and fired more than a dozen shots through her windshield toward the suspect.
The driver was not hit. Moments later about 15 officers arrived, pinned the man's vehicle and made an arrest. Copeland says it appears he was under the influence of some drug and charges are pending. "It appears that the suspect was under the influence of something," said Major Andrew Ellis.
Copeland says the officer received minor injuries to her face. "This officer is very, very lucky to be alive," said Chief Roberto Hylton.
Blackledge rushed home where her 12-year-old son witnessed it all. "It just saddens me. My family is shaken up."
