Falah Octavia Nulgun Joe, 28, of Falls Church, appeared in U.S. District Court Tuesday. She faces federal kidnapping charges for the alleged abduction of Kamron Wells, who disappeared Sunday morning while on a shopping trip with his family in Alexandria. He was found safe hours later at a home in Northwest D.C. and reunited with his family
Joe, a former stripper, had previously pleaded guilty to assault charges after trying to attack an ex-boyfriend during his 2003 sentencing. He had been convicted of killing someone at the D.C. club where she worked.
But when the Assistant U.S. Attorney raised the issue during a routine hearing Tuesday, Joe began to shout in court.
"I didn't stab no one," she yelled. "This is [b.s.] I don't want to hear this."
She also addressed the kidnapping charge, saying, "I didn't kidnap nobody. That little boy was out in the cold by himself. His father left him out there."
Marshals removed Joe from the courtroom. The judge ordered a recess. When Joe returned, she was silent.
Attorneys revealed Joe just spent 30 days in jail for failing to get court-ordered mental health treatment. She was released just days before Wells' alleged kidnapping.
Joe is scheduled to return to federal court in D.C. on Thursday.
Meantime, Kamron Wells' family says the 5-year-old boy seems to be fine after his bizarre ordeal.
"He seemed unphased," said his mother, Lanashia Wells. "He's back to being his usual self, we're grateful for that."
So far investigators have found no connection at all between Falah Joe and Kamron Wells' family.
Investigators credited a D.C. man, Milton Mooya, with helping police find the missing boy, Kamron Wells. Mooya was watching football at him home early Monday when a friend stopped by with a woman and child in tow.
Mooya immediately became suspicious, he said.
"When they came in, she was like, 'That's my son.' He kept saying, 'That's not my mom.' Of course, I heard the Amber Alert, put two and two together," recalled Mooya.
The woman fled after Mooya made reference to the Amber alert, he said. Mooya chased her while his friend flagged down a D.C. police officer, who detained the woman, later identified by police as Falah Joe.
Kamron's real mother was impressed he spoke up and said Joe wasn't his mom. "The fact that he said that's not my mom, that's brave of him to do that," said Lanaisha Wells.
