Richmond, Va. - Buoyed by a chance to win Virginia in a presidential race for the first time in 44 years, the state Democratic Party took in four times more cash since July than the state Republican Party.
State Board of Elections reports from political action committees and parties for July through September fundraising show the Democrats raised more than $775,000.
The reports were compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project.
Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's PAC, Moving Virginia Forward, received nearly $300,000.
The state GOP reported slightly less than $200,000 over the same period.
The state Democratic Party had $444,000 on hand entering the campaign's final month while the state GOP had $151,000.
Both parties have been aggressive in fundraising activities this year with Democrat Barack Obama (

The last Democrat to win the state in a presidential election was Lyndon Johnson in 1964. It's been decades since either party campaigned significantly in Virginia during the fall.
