Vanek's shootout goal lifts Sabres over Bruins

- (Sports Network) - Thomas Vanek was held scoreless for the first time this season, hut his shootout score was the eventual game-winner in Buffalo's 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Vanek scored seven goals and added two assists in the first five games of the season, but could not score during regulation or overtime for the Sabres. His goal in the fifth round of the shootout put Buffalo on top, though, and Ryan Miller's save of a Marc Savard shot clinched the win for the Sabres. Clarke MacArthur and Drew Stafford scored in regulation for Buffalo, which has won five of six to start the season. Miller stopped 30 shots for the Sabres, who came back from down 2-0 for the win. Dennis Wideman and Phil Kessel scored for Boston, which has lost four of five. Manny Fernandez had 28 saves for the Bruins.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne's wrister past a just-off-the- bench Curtis Joseph proved to be the difference in the shootout, giving the struggling Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 decision over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Francois Beauchemin scored for the third consecutive game for the Ducks, who had lost five of six to open the season. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 36-of-38 shots, and both Toronto attempts in the shootout to pick up the win. Nik Antropov scored both goals for the Maple Leads, and Alexei Ponikarovsky tallied two assists. Toronto has dropped five straight since a season- opening win over the Red Wings, including three of the past four in the shootout. Vesa Toskala yielded two goals on 21 shots through three periods and the extra session, but was curiously pulled for Joseph before the shootout began.

Final Score: Columbus 4, Vancouver 2
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Derek Dorsett scored the eventual winning goal in the second period, and Pascal Leclaire made 23 saves as Columbus beat Vancouver, 4-2. Jason Chimera, Kristian Huselius and Rick Nash also scored for the Blue Jackets, who bounced back from a 6-3 loss at Nashville on Saturday. Kyle Wellwood and Kevin Bieksa had the goals for Vancouver, which concluded a six-game road trip with its third straight loss. Roberto Luongo made 29 saves for the Canucks.
Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Atlanta 2 (OT)
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Vinny Lecavalier's power-play goal 1:41 into overtime lifted the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first victory of the season, a 3-2 decision over the Atlanta Thrashers. This also marked the first victory for new Tampa head coach Barry Melrose. Mark Recchi and Vinny Prospal also scored for Tampa Bay, which began the season with a five-game winless skid (0-2-3) -- all the setbacks were by one goal. Mike Smith was strong with 31 saves for the Lightning, who will host the Sharks on Saturday. Colby Armstrong and Todd White scored for the Thrashers, who fell to 2-2-2 on the young season. Kari Lehtonen allowed three goals on 38 shots in the losing effort.

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Matthew Lombardi's early second-period tally proved to be the game-winner, as the Calgary Flames edged the Washington Capitals (

news), 2-1, at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Jarome Iginla also scored and Miikka Kiprusoff made 30 saves for the Flames, who defeated the Capitals for the first time since March 13, 1999, snapping an eight-game winless streak. Sergei Fedorov tallied for Washington, which began a three-game road trip by dropping its second straight. Jose Theodore allowed two goals on 28 shots in a losing effort.
